Instructor(s): Gillian Hadfield

This seminar will explore the challenges around building effective legal and regulatory systems to govern the development and deployment of artificial intelligence (AI) throughout society. We will begin with understanding some of the nuts and bolts of how machine learning (ML) works and why we are facing what is known as the AI alignment problem—ensuring that AI systems are built, deployed and function to advance human goals and values including economic prosperity, sustainability, fair treatment, safe and healthy communities, and dignified lives.  We’ll then discuss the current regulatory landscape for AI and consider what new approaches to law and regulation we may need to achieve AI alignment.
