This course introduces students to legal ethics and professional responsibility. Students will examine the foundations of ethical reasoning, the Rules of Professional Conduct, and the principles and values which underlie legal ethics. Topics to be considered include: the solicitor-client relationship, the roles and responsibilities of the advocate, conflicts of interest, privilege and confidentiality, whistle-blowing, the regulation of the legal profession, and the role of the profession with respect to access to justice and other aspects of the administration of justice.

Evaluation
A 3-hour take-home examination (60%), one written assignment with a 1,000 word limit (30%), and class participation (10%). For the written assignment, students will be expected to provide a written response to a question that will be circulated just before Reading Week and will be due on December 18 at 10:00 a.m. (i.e., the deadline for first term written work). For class participation, the course will include weekly discussion questions. Each week, the professors will assign 5-6 students to prepare a 300-word response to the discussion question. The responses will be due the day before the next class and will be marked for completion. Each student will be expected to respond to one discussion question over the course of the term.
