Law students didn’t have any problem saying good-bye to the Moot Court Room, in advance of its demolition.

The recent graffiti party on May 23, 2013 officially closed out the room in preparation for construction of the new Jackman Law Building.

Forty students and faculty, including Dean Mayo Moran, decked out in a hazmat suit, put on gloves, grabbed some cans and started to spray paint.

The Faculty of Law is pleased to highlight the work of the first four students to complete the requirements for the JD/Certificate in Aboriginal Legal Studies. Established in the 2012-2013 academic year, this certificate is for students who have a vocational or intellectual interest in the intersection between law and the history, politics, thought, or practices of Aboriginal Law. 

It its decision on the case Cojocaru v. British Columbia Women’s Hospital and Health Centre, the Supreme Court of Canada cites work by Prof. Simon Stern about the degree to which a judge's copying from other sources in a trial decision, with or without attribution, should affect the validity of the decision. The decision quotes at length from Prof. Stern's forthcoming article "Copyright Originality and Judicial Originality," which will appear in the University of Toronto Law Journal. The SCC agrees with Prof.

In a commentary in The Globe and Mail, JD student Joshua Stark, with litigator Jessica Prince, looks at the prestigious Munk Debates and wonders why they have not featured any women debaters since 2009 ("Be it resolved: The Munk Debates should include women," May 15, 2013). Both Stark and Prince are former debating champions.

Profs. Colleen Flood and Trudo Lemmens are the co-editors of a special issue of The Journal of Law, Medicine & Ethics devoted to "Global Health and the Law" (Volume 41, Issue 1: Spring 2013). The issue comprises the paper from the National Health Law Conference held in Toronto in May 2012.

The Faculty of Law’s building project includes exciting plans for the green space at the south end of the site.  In addition to creating wonderful new space for the Faculty of Law, we are also committed to enhancing the beauty of the natural environment in Philosopher’s Walk and the other areas around the new Jackman Law Building.

The architects conceptualized the landscape plan to address four primary challenges:

The Faculty of Law’s innovative Internationally Trained Lawyers Program celebrated its third commencement ceremony April 29, 2013, with 37 graduates from 19 countries. And for the first time this cohort had lawyers from Albania, Guyana, Ireland, Malaysia, Moldova, Nepal, Sudan, and Venezuela.

In the magazine Policy Options, JD student Laura McGee has written an opinion piece proposing income tax incentives to encourage corporations to include “social responsibility” provisions in their articles of incorporation (""How to encourage corporate social responsibility," May 2013).
