CBC Books: Best Canadian nonfiction of 2022 lists "Valley of the Birdtail"

The Waywayseecappo Indian reserve was created on the West side of the Birdtail river in western Manitoba in 1877. Two years later, on the other side of the river, white settlers established a town named Rossburn.

The story of these two communities is captured in Valley of the Birdtail: An Indian Reserve, a White Town, and the Road to Reconciliation (HarperCollins 2022).

Ritu Khullar (LLB 1991) appointed Chief Justice of Alberta

The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau announced on Nov. 28 the appointment of the Honourable Ritu Khullar (LLB 1991), a judge of the Court of Appeal of Alberta, as the new Chief Justice of Alberta, Chief Justice of the Court of Appeal for the Northwest Territories, and Chief Justice of the Court of Appeal of Nunavut.

Chief Justice Khullar replaces the Honourable Catherine A. Fraser, the first woman appointed Chief Justice of a province in Canada, who retired earlier this year.

‘Not just about history’: U of T marks National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women

Members of the University of Toronto community gathered Tuesday to remember the 14 women killed in the anti-feminist massacre at the École Polytechnique 33 years ago – and honour the lives of those taken and affected by gender-based violence.

Students, faculty, staff, librarians and alumni came together at Hart House for the in-person commemoration of the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women, while others attended virtually by livestream.

Fourteen women died in the attack on Dec. 6, 1989. Another 10 women and four men were injured.

Faculty of Law alumnus, George Strathy (LLB 1974), Ontario Chief Justice who will retire later this summer, is quoted in an article in the Globe & Mail (Jul. 18) on mental health in the legal profession. Strathy's paper, The Litigator and Mental Health, is also cited.
