Convocation: You did it! We're so proud of you!

Today, the University of Toronto Faculty of Law celebrated its Class of 2022 at its first in-person ceremony in two years! 

In addition to the 208 JDs who crossed the stage at Convocation Hall, five graduates of the Master of Laws (LLM) and Doctor of Juridical Science (SJD) were conferred their degrees at today's spring ceremony.

Damian Tan Yi Hsien (LLM 2022)

Dual Degree Program: Bachelor of Laws (National University of Singapore) / Master of Laws (University of Toronto).

Damian Tan Yi Hsien

Damian completed a Master of Laws with a Concentration in Business Law under a Dual Degree Program in June 2022. He is slated to start his legal career in Finance practice. 

David Walder (LLM 2022)

David Walders (HBA Trinity 2005, JD 2008) is an adjunct professor at U of T Law and the Deputy Director of the Indigenous Innovation Initiative, a platform to provide funding and support for Indigenous Innovators and entrepreneurs.

A securities lawyer, he served as Assistant Secretary of the Governing Council at the University of Toronto since 2013. Before that, he worked at the Permanent Mission of Canada to the United Nations in the Legal, Economic and Social Affairs Section. 

He began his career as a Corporate Associate at Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison LLP in New York City, where he practiced primarily in Capital Markets.

David is Anishinaabe, and a member of the Ardoch Algonquin First Nation.

He completed a research thesis during his Masters of Law. 

Kritika Kapoor (LLM 2022)

Kritika Kapoor

Kritika Kapoor completed her Master of Laws with a concentration in Business Law. She is currently a summer student at Davies Ward Phillips and Vineberg and intends to focus her practice on mergers and acquisitions and taxation.

Nicholas Khoo Li Jie (LLM 2022)

Dual Degree Program: Bachelor of Laws (National University of Singapore) / Master of Laws (University of Toronto)

Nicholas completed his Master of Laws with a concentration in Business Law. He is currently waiting to sit for the Singapore bar examinations.

Dustin Gumpinger (SJD 2022)

SJD Thesis: Deconstructing and Reconstructing Constitutional Rights: Jacques Derrida’s General Strategy of Deconstruction and the Constitutional Rights of Canada’s Indigenous Peoples

Dustin completed a Bachelor of Arts (Honours), with First Class Honours, from the University of Alberta. He finished a Juris Doctor from Osgoode Hall Law School. After articling with a national full-service law firm on Bay Street, Dustin practiced civil litigation at a national insurance defence boutique in British Columbia. He went on to pursue a thesis intensive Master of Laws, with a concentration in Legal Theory at U of T. Dustin is currently a Lecturer in the Faculty of Management at the Okanagan Campus of the University of British Columbia. He is also an Arbitrator and Adjudicator under the law of the self-governing Westbank First Nation.
