D'Arcy White, James Flynn and Dr. Scott Guan China

University of Toronto Faculty of Law alumnus Scott Guan (SJD 2003) of Zhong Lun Law Firm in Shanghai, China was elected President of the World Law Group (WLG), “a global network of elite law firms, with 61 member firms, approximately 21,000 lawyers in more than 400 cities in over 90 countries.”

Dr. Guan proudly supports the Faculty’s International Business Law Summer Internship with the Dr. Scott Guan China Law Practice Award, an award that provides one JD student with an exceptional opportunity to intern in Shanghai, China for six weeks from May to July.

JD students D'Arcy White and James Flynn were the inaugural recipients of the award in 2018 and 2019, respectively. Both recipients were given the opportunity to work with Dr. Guan conducting research on legal and commercial topics; drafting research memoranda and professional legal advice; drafting commercial contracts and transaction documents; and reviewing and editing English legal and professional documents. Dr. Guan is a partner who practices in the areas of cross-border investments and mergers & acquisitions.

Due to travel restrictions and public health measures during the COVID-19 pandemic, the award was not issued in 2020 but will be awarded once international travel freely resumes.

Dr. Guan will serve as President of WLG for a two-year term as of October 15, 2021. He previously served two terms on WLG’s Board of Directors from 2016 to 2018 as Regional Director - Asia Pacific and from 2019 to 2021 as Director. He also co-chaired WLG’s International Corporate Transactions Practice Group from 2017 to 2021.
