UofT Residence Guarantee Options for New JD Students 2024-2025

Updated December 11, 2023

We are delighted to be able to offer new first year JD students who are interested in residence-style accommodation, the opportunity to obtain guaranteed accommodation for their first year.

  • The accommodation styles and eligibility requirements are quite different, so close attention must be paid to determine which is more suitable to your needs.

This offer is for a “Recruitment Space” courtesy of the Faculty of Law, on a first-come, first-served basis, with preference given to students whose permanent residences are farthest from Toronto. The JD Admissions Office will collect requests for the guaranteed spaces, determine who will receive the guarantee, then forward the names to the residence.

Requesting a Guaranteed Unit in University Family Housing (UFH)

This process is for obtaining one of the guaranteed units in UFH only, and is not an application for a unit.

Please AWAIT our email in early May with the call for requests for the guarantee

  1. Check that you meet the UFH eligibility requirements, and review the facility information and other pertinent details at the UFH website

  2. EMAIL us at JD Admissions at admissions.law@utoronto.ca with your request for a guaranteed space by the end of day Sunday May 12, 2024

  3. Be prepared to indicate:
      • how you meet the eligibility requirements, and also
      • that you will be able to provide the requisite proof for the SFH application as described on the SFH website

  4. Update your current mailing address and phone number on ACORN and OLSAS

Selection for the Guarantee
After receipt of all requests by the deadline, JD Admissions will make the selection on who will be nominated for the guarantee. Consideration will be on a first-come, first-served basis, with preference will given to students with families and/or students who reside geographically furthest to the university. Obtaining the guarantee will be subject to meeting UFH eligibility requirements as determined by UFH.

Notification
Notification of selection is expected to be emailed by June 1 from JD Admissions.

  • Students nominated for the guarantee
The notification will include instructions for applying to UFH for the units.

  • Students not seeking/without the guarantee
You are welcome to apply to SFH by the usual methods as described on the SFH website. We would recommend that you submit that application early, since students who are able to move into SFH before July 1, have traditionally the best chance of obtaining a unit.

Applying for a NON-GUARANTEED Suite in Graduate House (Grad House)

You will be applying for accommodation for which the selection will be made by Grad House, and not the law school. Please follow the standard application procedures as described by Grad House.

  1.  If you have not already applied online for Grad House accommodation
      • Apply online to Grad House for a suite, without delay, as a Graduate/Second Entry Student/Applicant.

      • You will need your UofT Student Number (located at the end of your offer of admission letter); and your enabled JOINid (or UTORid, sent by email previously) to access the online application.

      • Apply using the Student Housing Portal.

      • When you submit your application, you will need to pay a $100 application deposit (payable by credit card). Please note the refund policy for the deposit at the Grad House website.
