In August 2005 Ugandan journalist Andrew Mwenda was jailed on charges of sedition for comments he made during his popular radio show. In response Mwenda decided to challenge this colonial-era penal provision as an unconstitutional infringement of freedom of expression. The IHRC was engaged by of expression. The IHRC was engaged by Mwenda's counsel to provide comparative research from other jurisdictions to support the petition. In September 2006 I travelled to Kampala on behalf of the Clinic to attend an appeals court hearing of the petition.
