Note: Students cannot take more than one workshop for credit in a given year.

The Legal Theory Workshop seminar is comprised of a subset of meetings of the Faculty Colloquium. The Colloquium meets weekly on Thursdays at lunch and brings scholars from other institutions to the Faculty of Law to present works in progress for discussion with colleagues (and students) here. Works presented should be expected to cover a range of topics in legal theory, broadly construed, including private law theory, criminal law theory, public law theory, and constitutional theory.

Past visitors to the Legal Theory Workshop include Eric Adams, Aditi Bagchi, George Letsas, Jennifer Nadler, Seana Shiffrin, Leah Ypi. (A comprehensive list of previous visitors can be found at https://www.law.utoronto.ca/scholarship-publications/workshops-and-seminars/legal-theory-workshops/legal-theory-workshop-past

Evaluation
Students who wish to enroll for academic credit are expected to attend all the workshops. (A complete schedule will be distributed before the term begins.) In addition, students will prepare reflection comments on papers, sent in advance of the talks, of about 500 words on four workshop papers (2 per term). These reflections must conclude with a question that could be asked of the speaker at the workshop, and students will be called upon to ask their question at the workshop at least once per term. At the end of the course, a list of questions about the talks will be distributed, and students will choose questions from this list to answer and discuss in a 30 minute in-person meeting with the instructors. Evaluation will be based on reflection comments (4 x 7.5% each); final oral examination (60%); and attendance (10%). Note: Students must pass all components of the course to receive credit for the workshop.
