John Harvey Whiteside

John Harvey Whiteside (BCom 1963 TRIN, LLB 1967, Hon DSacLitt 2019 TRIN), a retired lawyer and philanthropist who was also a key volunteer at Trinity College for many years, has passed away. He was 82.

‘A life-long champion of accessibility’: U of T remembers former lieutenant governor and alumnus David Onley

The University of Toronto community is mourning the loss of David Onley, a passionate advocate for disability rights and accessibility whose close relationship with the university spanned decades. 

An alumnus of U of T Scarborough where he was a senior lecturer in its political science department, Onley served as lieutenant governor of Ontario from 2007 to 2014 following a distinguished career as a broadcaster.

He died Saturday at the age of 72, leaving behind wife Ruth Ann and three children, Jonathan, Robert and Michael and their families.

Gov. Gen Mary Simon announced a total of 99 new appointments and promotions on Dec. 29. They include: Ron Deibert, a professor in the department of political science in the Faculty of Arts & Science and the director of the Citizen Lab at the Munk School of Global Affairs & Public Policy; Eva Grunfeld, physician and professor in the department of family and community medicine in the Temerty Faculty of Medicine; and Faculty of Law alumnus Martin F.

CBC Books: Best Canadian nonfiction of 2022 lists "Valley of the Birdtail"

The Waywayseecappo Indian reserve was created on the West side of the Birdtail river in western Manitoba in 1877. Two years later, on the other side of the river, white settlers established a town named Rossburn.

The story of these two communities is captured in Valley of the Birdtail: An Indian Reserve, a White Town, and the Road to Reconciliation (HarperCollins 2022).
