Andrew Stobo Sniderman and Douglas Sanderson (Amo Binashii)

Valley of the Birdtail: An Indian Reserve, a White Town, and the Road to Reconciliation (HarperCollins 2022) has been shortlisted for the 9th annual Emerging Writer Prize in the non-fiction category. 

Co-authored by Andrew Stobo Sniderman (JD 2014) and Prichard Wilson Chair in Law & Public Policy, Professor Douglas Sanderson (JD 2003) (Amo Binashii), the book is one of five non-fiction titles to be shortlisted, including Our Voice of Fire: A Memoir of a Warrior Rising by Brandi Morin and Run Towards the Danger: Confrontations with a Body of Memory by 2023 Academy Award winner (Best Writing Adapted Screenplay), Sarah Polley. 

The Emerging Writing Prize, administered by Rakuten Kobo, recognizes exceptional books written by first-time Canadian authors in three categories: Literary Fiction, Non-Fiction, and one of three types of genre fiction: Romance, Speculative Fiction, or Mystery. The 2023 shortlist "recognizes 18 of Canada's most compelling debut books." 

Their book has also been shortlisted for the Shaughnessy Cohen Prize for Political Writing, to be announced on May 10.

The Emerging Writing Prize winners will be announced June 22, 2023.
