JD students Brynne Dalmao (2L)Elizabeth Hicks (2L)Julia Campbell (3L) and Nina Patti (3L) are the winners of the 2024 Gale Cup. Brynne Dalmao was also awarded the Dickson Medal for Exceptional Oralist Performance in the preliminary round.

Held in Toronto Feb. 9 & 10, the Gale Cup Moot, founded in 1974, is Canada’s premier bilingual criminal/constitutional mooting competition. 

Dalmo and Hicks (counsel for the appellant) faced Université de Montréal in the final round before a panel including the Hon. Suzanne Côté, Justice of the Supreme Court of Canada; Associate Chief Justice Michal Fairburn of the Court of Appeal for Ontario; and Justice Patrice Abrioux of the British Columbia Court of Appeal.

Elizabeth, Brynne, Nina, and Julia thank their coaches, U of T Law alumni Ema Ibraković (JD 2022), judicial law clerk (Court of Appeal for Ontario); Sinziana Hennig (JD 2011), partner at Stikeman Elliott LLP and adjunct lecturer at U of T Law; and Paul-Erik Veel (JD 2009), partner at Lenczner Slaght LLP and adjunct professor at U of T Law.

They also thank their 3L student coaches, Benjamin MacLean-Max and Emma Danaher, and the practitioners who provided feedback to their run-throughs in the months leading up to the competition.
