On Tuesday, October 21st, two University of Toronto law students travelled to Guantánamo Bay to observe the final stages of Canadian Guantánamo detainee Omar Khadr's pre-trial.  Khadr's trial is scheduled to begin on November 28th.  The students, Anthony Navaneelan and Kate Oja, are members of the Faculty of Law's International Human Rights Clinic and will be observing the pre-trial hearing as part of the clinical education program.  Also in attendance will be Faculty of Law professor Audrey Macklin, observing the pre-trial on behalf of Human Rights Watch.

The International Human Rights Clinic, and professor Audrey Macklin, previously appeared as interveners before the Supreme Court of Canada as part of Khadr's Canadian battle to obtain disclosure of documents held by the Canadian government and thought to be relevant to charges brought against him in the United States.  The clinic made joint submissions with Human Rights Watch (HRW) as third party interveners in the case.
