In an op-ed published in the Toronto Star (Jan. 7), Professor Gillian Hadfied, director and chair of the Schwartz Reisman Institute in Technology and Society, discusses how Toronto institutions such as U of T and the Vector Institute are pioneering innovations in AI fairness.

Hadfied writes: "AI has quickly infiltrated the global economy. Machine learning has been adopted in all sectors of industry from high-tech to traditional manufacturing, while governments worldwide are looking to machine learning to improve public services, courts, and health care.

But is AI outpacing our human ability to keep up? Canada, and Toronto in particular, has a special role to play in making sure that we do not get out too far over our skis in the AI race."
