On Wednesday, March 26th, U of T law students and professors appeared as interveners before the Supreme Court of Canada as part of Canadian Guantánamo detainee Omar Khadr's ongoing legal battle to obtain disclosure of documents held by the Canadian government and thought to be relevant to charges brought against him in the United States.

Prof. Jeffrey MacIntosh has written a two-part series in the Financial Post analyzing the recent decision by the Quebec Court of Appeal in favour of BCE bondholders, and exploring the larger issue of the principle of "shareholder primacy" ("The Peoples corporate law: unsafe at any speed," June 10, 2008, and "Engine of wealth," June 11, 2008).

Six Faculty of Law students receive Cressy awards

Six Faculty of Law students have been chosen as recipients of the 2008 University of Toronto Gordon Cressy Student Leadership Awards.

The Gordon Cressy Student Leadership Awards recognize students for outstanding extra-curricular contributions to their college, faculty, school or department, or to the university as a whole. The awards were established in 1994 by the University of Toronto Alumni Association (UTAA) and the Division of University Advancement.

JD student Robert Wakulat has been awarded the David Estrin Prize, given annualy by the Canadian Bar Association's National Environment Energy & Resources Law Section (NEERLS) for a student essay on environmental, energy or resources law.

A symposium on "The Future of Administrative Justice" was hosted by the Faculty of Law in January 2008. It explored the future of administrative justice by bringing together academics, participants in the tribunal sector and government policy makers to dialogue about improvements to administrative tribunals in Ontario and other jurisdictions.

A 28-page report on the symposium has now been released (May 2008), which summarizes the presentations and the roundtable discussion that wrapped up the day.

On April 4, 2008, the new Centre for Professionalism, Ethics and Public Service hosted a major symposium, "Can Legal Ethics be Taught?", that brought together leading experts to discuss the teaching of legal ethics.

All sessions from this symposium were recorded on video and can now be viewed over the web.

The Faculty of Law is delighted to announce the appointment of Markus Dubber to our faculty.  He will be joining us as a Full Professor in July of 2009.  Prof. Dubber is already familiar to some members of the law school community as he is currently spending his sabbatical year at the University of Toronto's Centre for Ethics.
