Kawaskimhon Aboriginal Moot celebrates 20th anniversary

Ontario’s resource riches in the northern Ring of Fire region (500 kilometres northeast of Thunder Bay) was the background to the recent Kawaskimhon Aboriginal Moot. Celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, the moot was hosted at the University of Toronto Faculty of Law, where it all started back in 1994. Law students, academics, Aboriginal elders, and lawyers working, studying and/or interested in Aboriginal law issues participated in the three-day event.

Prof. Jutta Brunnée has been selected Interim Dean of the Faculty of Law from May 1, 2014 to April 30, 2015, or until the appointment of a new dean. The president of the University of Toronto Meric Gertler made the announcement today after approval by the Agenda Committee of Academic Board.

Prof. Yasmin Dawood has co-authored a commentary in The Globe and Mail replying to a commentary by Minister of State for Democratic Reform Pierre Poilievre that defended the Fair Elections Act. The commenary by Prof. Dawood and her co-authors notes several continued areas of concern about the act ("Criticism of Elections Act is legitimate, and should not be brushed off," March 25, 2014).

Making Life Work: The Perpetual Balancing Act, held by the Centre for the Legal Profession at the Faculty of Law on March 11, featured distinguished panelists: The Honourable Madam Justice Rosalie Abella, Jean Fraser, Trisha Jackson and moderator, Sheila Gibb. The audience of more than 100 people, including students, alumni, and practicing lawyers, heard important advice on the challenges of juggling a law career with the demands of raising a family and outside interests.
