“Climb for a Cure”

Team Kilimanjaro: Jason Mitschele, Dwayne King
and Niamh Harraher

I am writing to let the Faculty of Law know about an exciting project undertaken by Niamh Harraher, JD/MSW 2002 and myself, Jason Mitschele, JD 2002, as we prepare to embark on our journey of a lifetime, called a “Climb for a Cure” to Mount Kilimanjaro scheduled to take place in February-March 2019.

Niamh and I have been friends for 20 years. We met in first-year law school in 1998.  We have been through many adventures, trials and tribulations together over the years but the most challenging times were when we both faced serious illness over the past few years.

On March 8, 2016 Niamh was diagnosed with Stage 2 Breast Cancer. At the same time I was undergoing a series of abdominal surgeries that kept me off of work for almost two years. In addition, I am totally blind but have never let my blindness stop me from following my dreams.

Prior to our recent illnesses, we had completed a number of athletic events together including long distance bike rides, runs and mini-triathlons for cancer and vision charities. In the summer of 2016, I was recovering from serious abdominal surgery while Niamh was undergoing chemotherapy. We promised each other that when we were better, we would climb Kilimanjaro as it is on our bucket list and we had talked about this climb many times in the past.

I am delighted that the day has arrived where Team Kilimanjaro, made up of myself, Niamh, and Dwayne King, a retired police officer who will be my guide, are in full planning, fundraising and training mode. Our “Climb for a Cure” to Kilimanjaro is scheduled to take place in February-March 2019.

We will be fundraising for the Canadian Cancer Society to help support the nearly 1 in 2 Canadians expected to be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime. Donations to the “Climb for a Cure” will help fund life-saving research, much-needed support services for patients and their families and other important work that could change lives. We are also raising money and awareness for the Foundation Fighting Blindness, www.ffb.ca, a non-profit organization that funds vision research.

In addition to raising money, we also hope to inspire others who are living with vision loss or a cancer diagnosis to embrace their dreams. We hope we can count on your support!

Sincerely,

Jason Mitschele, on behalf of Team Kilimanjaro
