Lea Briere-Godbout

Léa Brière-Godbout (SJD) has been appointed a professor in the Department of Legal Sciences at the Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM), effective July 1, 2022.

Brière-Godbout specializes in criminal law and equality rights. She is currently a doctoral candidate at the Faculty of Law of the University of Toronto, where she works under the supervision of Professor Sophia Moreau. Brière-Godbout's research is supported by the FRQSC, the SSHRC (Vanier scholarship) and the Canadian Bar Association (Viscount Bennett Fellowship). Brière-Godbout holds a law degree from UQAM and has been a member of the Bar since 2014. For two years, she served as a lawyer-researcher with Judge Doyon of the Quebec Court of Appeal. Brière-Godbout is a graduate of Yale University's Master of Laws program, where she notably worked on a New York City criminal law reform initiative. In 2018-19, Brière-Godbout worked as a research lawyer at the Supreme Court of Canada with the Chief Justice. Since 2020, Brière-Godbout has co-taught a master's seminar at U of T Law.
