The Hon. Michael J. Moldaver (BA UC 1968, LLB 1971, Hon. LLD 2019), Justice of the Supreme Court of Canadahas announced his retirement from the bench this September. On Dec. 23 Justice Moldaver will turn 75, the mandatory retirement age for Supreme Court judges.

An expert in criminal law, his SCC biography states, "Justice Moldaver began his judicial career as a member of the High Court of Justice for Ontario when he was appointed to the Supreme Court of Ontario (later the Ontario Court of Justice (General Division)) on April 12, 1990. He was elevated to the Court of Appeal for Ontario on December 22, 1995 and to the Supreme Court of Canada on October 21, 2011.'"

The Globe and Mail quotes Justice Moldaver's speech upon receiving an honorary Doctor of Laws, honoris causa at U of T in 2919: "He told the students he sometimes wakes up in the middle of the night thinking he is 'inadequate and unqualified,' and has 'no business sitting on the Supreme Court of Canada.'"
