The gay-rights movement has become complacent about its court victories and risks losing the fight for same-sex marriage, warned Professor Kent Roach ("Gay lobby complacent, law professor warns", Globe and Mail, September 13).

Prof. Roach says gay activists and their lawyers are caught up in celebrating their landmark victory in the Ontario Court of Appeal and warns that politicians may use the Charter of Rights and Freedoms' notwithstanding clause to reverse it. He says the sense of victory could be misleading.

"I think this is a serious mistake," he said. "The legislatures and society still have a lot to say about how this plays out."
