On March 24, 2007, U of T students took first place in the Fasken Martineau First Year International Law Moot Competition held at the Federal Court of Canada in Toronto. Students Adam Lazier and Kiran Patel earned honourable mentions as oralists. This is the second time that U of T students have won the competition since it was founded in 1989.
The Fasken Martineau International Moot is an annual competition aimed at providing first year students with an opportunity to argue complex points of international law. The students who competed this year - James Wilson, Vinay Sarin, Peter Senkpiel, Michael Rosenburg, Adam Lazier, Stephanie Couzin, Kiran Patel, and Akash Deep Khokar - made a strong showing in the competition, which included law students from Osgoode, Queens, Cornell, Syracuse, and SUNY Buffalo.
Upper year students Andrea Harrington and Nicole Henderson provided invaluable coaching and mentoring, along with assistance from Matt Goldstein, Shawn Richard, and James Renihan, who helped to prepare the students during pre-competition run-throughs. "Every participant this year put forth a tremendous effort, and we're incredibly proud of the dedication and skill the team displayed," said Harrington. "We would also like to thank Fasken Martineau for sharing their knowledge and experience and for dedicating so much time and energy to the development of these future advocates." Fasken Martineau firm volunteers included Mae Chon, Sally Woods, Annie Finn, TJ Adhihetty, Sarah Armstrong ('02), Brad Moore ('02), Don Short ('73) and Sou Choi. U of T students would also like to thank the many members of the legal community who served as judges and timekeepers.
