Group of law graduates cheering, smiling

Under a sunny blue sky, Convocation 2012 drew a packed audience of family and friends on June 8, as the JD grads cheered their classmates on one by one. At times, the mystical beat of a native drum congratulated some of our Aboriginal graduates as they stepped up to the dais, a new tradition started by Prof. Douglas Sanderson, a member of the Opaskwayak Cree Nation.

Distinguished keynote speaker, Justice Robert Sharpe, LLB 1970, a former dean of the Faculty of Law, humoured the crowd with a history of ‘deans past,’ and assured the grads that he did not receive a warm law-school welcome from Cecil Wright, the first dean of the modern-day law school, unlike the one they had with Dean Mayo Moran on day one.

The traditional Faculty of Law lunch on the back lawn followed for a decidedly relaxed and fun presentation of awards, as the celebration continued.
