Ron Daniels

Former dean and law school alumnus Ron Daniels, JD 1986, now president at John Hopkins University, is one of four recipients of the 2015 Academic Leadership Award, bestowed biennially in the US by the Carnegie Corporation of New York. Considered one of the highest honours in post-secondary education, the award includes a $500K grant to each winner's institution, to be spent at the honorees' discretion.

Daniels has announced JHU will use the funds to expand its accessibility initiatives for Baltimore City Public School students. These include: growing support for low-income students through the Baltimore Scholars program, partnerships with local K-8 schools, and new initiatives aimed at college and career preparation.

"I am deeply honored to be recognized among the esteemed recipients of this award," Daniels said. "It is exciting to have the innovative work by our faculty and staff and Johns Hopkins' commitment to Baltimore recognized by the Carnegie Corporation, a great champion of higher education."

The award and grant recognize individuals who excel in their leadership and vision for equity in undergraduate education, liberal arts, interdisciplinary programming, elementary and high school education reform, and fostering strong partnership links between institutions and local communities.

As dean of the University of Toronto Faculty of Law from 1995-2005, Daniels spearheaded the creation of some of the law schools’s most important public interest programs, including Pro Bono Students Canada, now operating in 21 law schools across the country, the educational mentorship program Law in Action Within Schools (LAWS), and the award-winning International Human Rights Program. He also oversaw the development of the faculty’s needs-based financial aid program and Canada’s only law school post-graduation debt relief program for law graduates who earn lower incomes

In June 2014, he received an honorary doctor of laws from the University of Toronto, in recognition of his extraordinary contributions to post-secondary education.
