Professors Abdi Aidid (LLM 2021) and Benjamin Alarie (JD/MA 2002), have received the Association of American Publishers (AAP) PROSE Award for The Legal Singularity: How Artificial Intelligence Can Make Law Radically Better. They were recognized in the category of works for Legal Studies and Criminology.

The AAP’s jury of peer publishing professionals and librarians recognize authors, editors and publishers whose scholarly work will have a significant impact in advancing their respective field of study. Their book was published in 2023 by University of Toronto Press.

The authors argue that the proliferation of AI-enabled technology – and specifically the advent of legal prediction – will radically change the law and legal profession, facilitating a ‘completeness’ of law that is clearer and fairer.

Alarie, the Faculty's Osler Chair in Business Law, co-founded a legal tech startup, Blue J, in 2015. The company’s software draws upon AI to provide instant and comprehensive answers in complex areas of tax, labour, and employment law.

Aidid previously served as Blue J's the vice-president, legal research prior to joining U of T full-time in 2021.
