Student and alumnae in a group shot

More than 70 alumni donors and volunteers attended the 2019 Donor and Volunteer Reception in Torys Hall on May 7, to celebrate and extend the Faculty of Law’s appreciation for the many ways alumni gave back this 2018-19 academic year.

The beautiful, sunlit venue was decorated with spring flowers and a number of posters highlighting the remarkable impact of student financial aid support from donors to law students. The conversations were numerous and the energy was positive.

The thoughtful, poignant story of JD/MBA student Aman Gill captivated the audience.

“[A]lthough I knew almost certainly that I wanted to attend U of T Law, unlike undergrad, I had to give careful consideration to each university’s financial aid program. But this consideration came easy,” said Gill. “Unlike many Canadian law schools, U of T’s comprehensive financial aid program is designed for students who need it the most. It made the decision easier because it relieved the uncertainty around relying on a competitive merit-based system. I knew that based on my family household income and unmet need, the financial aid I would receive would be fair.”

Dean Ed Iacobucci also expressed his gratitude and appreciation for the tremendous support of the Campaign for Excellence without Barriers, as well as the many volunteer hours alumni give back. New Law Alumni Association President Andrea Burke also spoke about the importance of maintaining connections with fellow alumni and giving back to the alma mater who helped many launch their careers in law.

Said Gill: "[Y]our contributions have superlative, long-lasting impacts that help students achieve their dreams. I and along with all other students who received financial aid have felt the impact and thank you immensely for enriching our law school experience and supporting us in our path to achieving excellence. Thank you very much."
