Seminar and reception celebrating Martin L Friedland

Former Dean and University Professor Emeritus Martin L. Friedland’s illustrious career has been – and continues to be – driven by the pursuit of wide-ranging scholarly interests and celebrated through countless prestigious honours and awards.

Professor Friedland’s many contributions are personal (he has been a dedicated and influential mentor to many), institutional (since his time as dean of our Faculty, he has remained an active member of our community and generous with his unique insight and wise counsel), in public service (among other things, on many government committees  and commissions) and, above all, scholarly (ranging from his ground-breaking work in criminal law to his incisive histories of the University of Toronto (UTP 2013) and of the first dean of law, W.P.M. Kennedy (UTP 2020).

Speakers:

  • Provost and Vice-Chancellor of Trinity College, Professor Mayo Moran (SJD 1999), U of T Law Dean Emerita (2006-2014): Friedland and Kennedy’s vision of Legal Scholarship
  • The Honourable Robert J. Sharpe (LLB 1970), U of T Law Dean Emeritus (1990-1995): Friedland and Legal History

  • J. Robert S. Prichard (LLB 1975), U of T Law Dean Emeritus (1984-1990): Friedland and the University of Toronto

The seminar will take place in Falconer Hall Solarium (FA2) and will be livestreamed.

The seminar will be followed by a reception (in-person only) in the Rowell Room (Flavelle House, 224), with a "toast to Marty" offered by Professor Emeritus Harry Arthurs, Osgoode Hall Law School; the Honourable Frank Iacobucci, U of T Law Dean Emeritus (1979-1983); the Honourabe Justice Lorne Sossin, Court Appeal for Ontario; and Professor Emeritus Arnold Weinrib.

Please join us in celebrating Marty’s 90th birthday at this special seminar and reception.
