The IHRP’s Gender Apartheid in Afghanistan Working Group (GAA), is pleased to host Canada’s Special Representative for Afghanistan, David Sproule, on Thursday, March 28, 2024 from 12:45pm - 2:00pm.

Under the supervision of Ghizal Haress (UofT Scholar-at-Risk), the GAA produced a research report on the situation of gender apartheid in Afghanistan since the Taliban took over the country in 2021, which examines Canada’s international human rights obligations with respect to this form of systemic gender discrimination. Join us on March 28th to hear our students present their findings and recommendations, as well as receive a live response from Canada’s Special Representative for Afghanistan, David Sproule.

David Sproule, a Canadian diplomat and legal expert, joined Canada’s Department of External Affairs in 1981, and has since served in numerous nations including as ambassador or high commissioner to Bangladesh, Afghanistan, Thailand, Norway, Libya, and Mongolia. From 1999 to 2004, Mr. Sproule served as counsel and deputy agent for Canada before the International Court of Justice in the Case Concerning Legality of Use of Force (Yugoslavia V. Canada). Now as Canada’s Special Representative for Afghanistan, Mr. Sproule is based in Doha, Qatar where he coordinates with international allies on a joint response to the crises in Afghanistan.

All are welcome to join us for this free event. Lunch will be served. Please register below.
