Tax law on poker winnings: Read it and weep

More and more Canadians are earning tidy sums playing poker on off-shore poker websites. They often practise incessantly, refine their skills using coaches and software programs, and participate in online forums dedicated to strategy. Many of these players spend 30 hours a week online playing against opponents from around the world.

Canadian educators need education on hate speech

Educate yourself about Canada’s hate laws, the Provost of the University of Ottawa told conservative pundit Ann Coulter in advance of her visit. Campus authorities apparently fear Coulter’s reputation for provocative views. They would remind her that unlike in the United States, hate speech is outlawed here and our defamation laws are strictly enforced.

No one who knows Aaron Mills was surprised to hear the law student was selected to receive the 2009 University of Toronto’s President’s Award for Outstanding Native Student of the Year.

JD student Christie Kneteman attended the UN climate change summit in Copenhagen in December 2009 as a volunteer with the organization Islands First. She wrote two article in the "4Students" section of Canadian Lawyers Magazine about her work at the summit and the crisis created by climate change for small Pacific islands ("Our islands are drowning," December 14, 2009; "COP15 in Copenhagen: chaotic and incredible," December 21, 2009 ).
