10 (tie). $30 million campaign for students launched at Faculty of Law

The University of Toronto Faculty of Law has announced a $30 million campaign to significantly deepen the financial aid pool and enhance the student experience. The Campaign for Excellence without Barriers, with a specific goal of raising $20 million for student financial aid, is the largest bursary-focused campaign at any Canadian law school.

10 (tie). The many perspectives on the #MeToo movement: panel discussion on International Women's Day

The #MeToo movement is having a seismic impact in the online and offline worlds for victims of sexual abuse and harassment, and their abusers, raising a whole host of questions about women’s rights, due process, options available to plaintiffs, and the very real fear of defamation claims. These were some of the issues discussed at the Faculty of Law’s “Perspectives on the #MeToo Movement,” on International Women’s Day, March 8th. More than 210 people attended—along with another 45 who watched the live broadcast on Facebook—to hear the panel: lawyers, Deepa Mattoo, Alexi Wood, Jonathan Lisus and filmmaker Sarah Polley.

9. Meet new faculty member Professor Chris Essert

Eight years ago, when he began his academic career at Queen's Faculty of Law, Chris Essert was assigned to teach a course on property law.  He discovered that the connection between property rights and equality under the law raised so many interesting questions that it was an area he should address in his research, too. “The modern university works best,” he says, “when scholars are teaching and researching in the same areas, so that teaching informs research, which in turn informs teaching.”

8. Leadership By Design event for African-Caribbean youth visits the Faculty of Law

About 60 high school students attended a Leadership by Design event, together with their parents, at the Faculty of Law, March 3rd, to hear inspirational talks from law alumni and current law students from the Black Law Students Association. Leadership by Design is the premiere program offered by the Lifelong Leadership Institute, a non-profit initiative which seeks “to provide youth in the African-Caribbean community with wide-ranging opportunities to develop and practise effective leadership.”

7. Nine law alumni selected to Canadian Lawyer's Top 25 Most Influential Lawyers List for 2018

Nine Faculty of Law alumni have been named to Canadian Lawyer’s Top 25 Most Influential Lawyers list, an annual ranking which recognizes lawyers who have stood out professionally over the last 18 months. This is the ninth year for the popular list. The magazine says it received hundreds of nominations, and selected 177 finalists who met the criteria. An online poll, where more than 10,000 people voted, and input from the editorial board selected the Top 25.

6. Toronto homecoming for renowned law and economics scholar: Meet new faculty member Professor Gillian Hadfield

Gillian Hadfield, a leading scholar and advocate for legal reform and redesign, is the latest pioneering academic to be drawn by Toronto’s growing reputation as an advanced technology hub. A native of Oakville, Ontario, she rejoins the University of Toronto Faculty of Law, after 17 years on faculty at the University of Southern California. She taught at U of T from 1995-2001.

5. Here's a look at the Class of 2021

Each year, since 2015, the Faculty of Law has been able to get a clear picture of our first-year JD students, thanks to a self-reporting survey used to gather information about the diversity of the new cohort, and to match students with peer mentors. This fall, we have 213 students in first year, out of 2,388 who applied. And for the fourth consecutive year, that number of applications to the JD program has gone up— 8% over last year and up 15% compared to 2015-16.

4. From far and wide: Meet some members of the Class of 2021

Born and raised in Vancouver by a dedicated mother who blazed her own impressive trail, Rebecca Barclay grew up curious and compassionate.  When she encountered those who were less fortunate, she empathized and wished she could be of more help. The law, she thought, might be a good way to do it.

3. Class of 2018 celebrates Convocation

More than 200 remarkable Faculty of Law graduates have now joined an outstanding global alumni group, as the Class of 2018 celebrated Convocation Day on June 8th. A warm sunny day greeted the newly minted alumni, who were gathered together with their family and friends, faculty and staff in Convocation Hall on King’s College Circle, and later at the Faculty of Law. The Right Honourable Beverley McLachlin, former chief justice of the Supreme Court of Canada, current Massey Fellow at the University of Toronto, U of T honorary degree recipient, plus some 30 more honorary degrees, was the Convocation Speaker, a tremendous honour for the Faculty of Law.

The Times Higher Education 2019 World University Rankings by Subject ranked the University of Toronto Faculty of Law among the Top 10 public law schools, according to new rankings by the prestigious Times Higher Education.
