Deputy Attorney General of Ontario Mark Freiman ('83) will be stepping down from his position at the end of January, and will join the University of Toronto Faculty of Law as a Visiting Fellow until the end of June.

Prior to being appointed Deputy Attorney General in January 2001, Mark Freiman was a well-known Canadian civil litigator. From 1990 to 1999, he was a partner at McCarthy Tetrault, where he specialized in public and constitutional law. He has appeared before all levels of court and has argued many high profile cases, including numerous defamation matters on behalf of the CBC and other media clients as well as representing the Canadian Human Rights Commission in the recent Zundel case. He has also taught trial advocacy at both the University of Toronto and Osgoode Hall Law School.

A graduate of the University of Toronto Law School, Mark Freiman received his LL.B. (Honors) in 1983. Prior to that he had earned a BA in English from University of Toronto and a PhD in Modern Thought and Literature from Stanford University. He was law clerk to Mr. Justice Brian Dickson of the Supreme Court of Canada and was called to the bar in 1985. He has taught courses in English, Canadian Studies, Communications and Popular Culture at universities in Canada, Great Britain and the United States, and has written extensively in the fields of law, literature and popular culture.
