Patenting of Life Forms - Technology and Intellectual Property Group Conference
Is there an ethical and legal framework for patent law? Can the apparent paradoxical perception of DNA as being central to identity and life, yet at the same time being a patentable commodity be reconciled? Should patent law be "value neutral" or should there be a normative framework (akin to corporate governance or the criminal code) as it relates to biotechnology? Discussion will also address the Canadian Intellectual Property Office's puzzling positions on patenting of cells, stem cells, and totipotent stem cells.
Speakers:
Dr. Laurence MacPhie, Bereskin & Parr
Dr. Sally Hemming, Smart & Biggar
Moderator:
Prof. Abraham Drassinower
