American Bar Association, Commission on Domestic Violence and the IHRP Present: Human Rights, Domestic and Sexual Violence: A Cross-Border Perspective

 The American Bar Association is meeting in Toronto, Canada for our 2011 Annual Meeting, August 4 - August 9.  The ABA’s sections, divisions, and other entities are developing more than 150 CLE programs that will help members and the public improve professional skills and develop expertise. There will be great opportunities to learn from and network with lawyers and judges from around the world.  The Opening Assembly will be held Saturday, August 6, at 5:30 p.m. at the newly opened, state-of-the-art Koerner Hall at the historic Royal Conservatory of Music. The ABA Annual Meeting is the PREMIER CONFERENCE of legal professionals in the United States.

Founded in 1994, the mission of the ABA Commission on Domestic Violence (the Commission) is to increase access to justice for victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, and stalking by mobilizing the legal profession. The Commission addresses the acute need to increase the number of well-trained and supported attorneys providing representation to victims by providing creative training opportunities for lawyers, law students and other legal advocates. provision of legal technical assistance; publication of legal manuals, treatises and texts; and promotion of protective state and federal legislation. 

Experts from both the United States and Canada discuss cases, legislation, and policy impacting impacting victims of domestic and sexual violence across borders from a human rights perspective.  Professor Carrie Bettinger-Lopez, Director of the Human Rights Clinic at the University of Miami, School of Law, will discuss the case of Town of Castle Rock v. Gonzales including its history leading up to the US Supreme Court and the Inter-American Human Rights Commission.
