U of T law alumnus David Asper (LLM '07) recently made a $7.5 million gift to the law school to establish the David Asper Centre for Constitutional Rights. The Asper Centre will be devoted to research and education in the area of constitutional rights in Canada. The cornerstone of the Centre will be a legal clinic that will bring together students, faculty and members of the bar to work on significant constitutional cases. The Faculty of Law is confident that the Asper Centre will play a vital role in articulating Canada's constitutional vision to the broader world.
The September 5th celebration is also an opportunity to welcome the Centre's inaugural Executive Director, Cheryl Milne. Cheryl is a leading member of the constitutional law bar in Ontario. She is currently Chair of the Ontario Bar Association's Constitutional, Civil Liberties and Human Rights section. She comes to the Faculty after having spent seventeen years as counsel at Justice for Children and Youth. During this time, Cheryl has appeared at all levels of court on a number of significant Charter cases, including several at the Supreme Court of Canada.
