Metis At The Supreme Court in 2011" with speaker Jason Madden

Lawyer Jason Madden will speak about the major Métis rights cases before the Supreme Court of Canada, including Cunningham and the Manitoba Métis Federation Land Claim.

JASON MADDEN BIOGRAPHY

Jason Madden is a Métis born and raised in Northwestern Ontario.  He is a descendant of the only group of Halfbreeds to negotiate a collective adhesion to one of the historic treaties in Ontario – Treaty #3.Jason is a graduate of Osgoode Hall Law School and articled with Gowling Lafleur Henderson LLP.  He acted as General Counsel to the Métis National Council from 2003 to 2006 and returned to private practice in 2006.  His practice focuses on litigation, governance issues and negotiations on behalf of Aboriginal peoples.  <p >  More specifically, Mr. Madden has been at the forefront of the new prominence of Métis rights and claims in Aboriginal jurisprudence.  He acted as counsel for the Métis National Council in its interventions in R. v. Powley and R. v. Blais before the Supreme Court of Canada.  He has also acted as counsel in much of the Métis litigation that has occurred from Ontario westward since the release of the Powley decision. <p >  Mr. Madden also advises Métis governments and communities from Ontario on governance, consultation related and business development issues, including, Métis joint venture with industry and the creation of Métis capital corporations.
