This course explores the application of law, regulation and other governance mechanisms to the field of broadcasting and the internet.  Using a seminar format, the course will review the changes in the regulation of broadcasting with the advent of internet streamers like Netflix and internet music services like Spotify.  The definition of a “Canadian program” will be reviewed, and its implications for the growth of the independent television production sector in Canada.  The course will also address the problem of online harm and the impact of social media.  Students will also study the application of competition policy to the internet platforms and the impact of the dominant platforms on news media.  The course will include a review of forthcoming legislation on all these topics.

Evaluation
Research paper of 3,750-5,000 words (15-20 pages) (90%) on a subject approved by the instructor; and class participation, including overall attendance and class input (10%).
