The Indigenous Youth Summer Program (IYSP) is for Indigenous high school students who are interested in the study of law. Selected students will spend a week living on-campus at the University of Toronto and learn about various aspects of the study of law, and how they intertwine with issues affecting Indigenous Peoples.

Information about the next session of the IYSP will be posted here as it becomes available.

About the IYSP

The IYSP is a program for Indigenous youth, ages 14-18, who are interested in the law and legal issues affecting their communities.  The IYSP offers an unprecedented opportunity for Indigenous youth to explore the fascinating worlds of Canadian and customary laws while learning how to think critically, communicate effectively and advocate respectively.  Students are exposed to an enriching academic experience and an introduction to university life. Classes are held at the Faculty of Law and accommodation is provided by the University of Toronto’s New College Residence where an Elder stays for the week with the students.  Students also enjoy the unique Toronto experience, attending the CN Tower, the Eaton Centre and a Toronto Blue Jays Game.

Lessons are taught by Indigenous law students, Elders, professors, and lawyers, and focus on constitutional law and the rights of Indigenous persons; property law and intersections between Wampum and common law; and criminal law and Gladue sentencing principles. A trip to Gladue Court at Old City Hall allows students to observe culturally relevant legal proceedings and to hear directly from a judge, Crown and defence counsel.
