On November 14, 2011 the University of Toronto Faculty of Law, in conjunction with the International Human Rights Program (IHRP), hosted Luis Moreno-Ocampo, Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court.

The ICC is a permanent court based in The Hague, with jurisdiction over the most serious crimes against humanity and war crimes.

Dean Mayo Moran formally welcomed Luis Moreno-Ocampo to Faculty of Law.  The two had a wide-ranging discussion, touching on the role of educational institutions like the University of Toronto Faculty of Law in conjunction with the mandate of the Court. Moreno-Ocampo was also interested in the role of international law in Dean Moran's area of expertise, Tort law.

The Prosecutor then sat down with faculty and students from the International Human Rights Program for an intimate discussion on the challenges facing the court.

Students, faculty and members of the public were treated to an interactive lecture from Moreno-Ocampo. He focused on suggestions that the role of the court has become politicized through selective UN Security Council referrals. The Prosecutor engaged students with his hypothesis that, as long as the court acts judicially once a case is brought before it, the harm of this politicisation might be mitigated.

The Prosecutor had a busy schedule for the rest of the afternoon, which included an interview with CTV's Lisa LaFlamme filmed at the Faculty of Law (see also other related media stories).

The capstone of his visit was a screening of Prosecutor, a documentary film about his tenure at the court. A panel discussion followed, with Moreno-Ocampo and Stephen Lewis, Canadian diplomat and international envoy for humanitarian efforts (view the webcast and liveblog). The panel was moderated by the IHRP's Renu Mandhane. The theatre was filled to capacity and the audience engaged Moreno-Ocampo and Lewis in a lively question and answer session.
