Note: This course satisfies the "Legal Ethics" graduation requirement.

This course introduces students to legal ethics and professional responsibility. Students will examine the foundations of ethical reasoning, the Rules of Professional Conduct, and the principles and values which underlie legal ethics. Topics to be considered include: the solicitor-client relationship, the roles and responsibilities of the advocate in both civil and criminal litigation, conflicts of interest, privilege and confidentiality, whistle-blowing, the roles and responsibilities of corporate and government counsel, the regulation of the legal profession, and the role of the profession with respect to access to justice and other aspects of the administration of justice.

Evaluation
A 3-hour take-home examination (60%), one written assignment with a 1,000 word limit (30%), and class participation (10%). For the written assignment, students will not be permitted to write on a topic of their choice; rather, students will be expected to provide a written response to the same question. The course will include weekly discussion questions. Students are expected to complete responses to two discussion questions (500 words each). Class participation will be based on the responses to these discussion questions.
