Applicants from universities outside Canada where English is not the primary language of instruction must provide the results of an English Language Proficiency examination as part of their application. Tests must have been taken within the last 24 months at the time of submission of the admission application.

Within your online admission application, you will need to upload an official scan of your English Language Proficiency test score and must also arrange for your testing agency to submit your official test score directly to the University of Toronto (Enrolment Services office). All scores must be received by the application deadline. The TOEFL institution code for U of T is 0982. There is no need to specify a department. For IELTS, you must only specify University of Toronto, Enrolment Services.

Please do not phone or email to inquire about the receipt of your official test score, as its status will be updated within your online admission once it has been manually processed. There may be a delay between the receipt of your official test score and the updating of its online status; as long as the official test score was received before the application deadline, this delay will not affect your application.

If this requirement is not applicable to you, it will be waived when your online admission application is reviewed. THERE IS NO NEED TO CONTACT SGS OR THE FACULTY OF LAW TO HAVE THIS DONE.

 You are not required to complete an English Language Proficiency test if:

  1. You are a Canadian citizen who studied at a Canadian university where the language of instruction is French;
  2. You are an international applicant whose primary language is not English but you have completed a degree program at a university where the language of instruction and examination has largely been in English. If you are such an international applicant, an official statement from your institution will be required, confirming the use of English as the language of instruction and examination. Please arrange for your university to send this statement directly to:  Graduate Program Office, Faculty of Law, University of Toronto, 84 Queen's Park, Toronto, ON, Canada, M5S 2C5.
  3. Additional:

    If you have completed a degree at a recognized university in one of the following countries, you are not required to provide proof of English-language proficiency:

    Australia, Barbados, Botswana, Ghana, Guyana, Hong Kong*, Ireland, Jamaica, Kenya, Lesotho, Liberia, Malawi, Malta, Namibia, New Zealand, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Sierra Leone, Singapore, South Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania, Trinidad and Tobago, Uganda, United Kingdom, United States of America, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.

Several English language testing services are acceptable. The most common test is the TOEFL or IELTS.

For those writing the TOEFL the TWE (Test of Written Language) is compulsory. The minimum TOEFL score requirement is 600 with a TWE of 5 on the paper-based scale; and 100 (out of 120) on the internet based test with a 24 (out of 30) in each component.

The IELTS Academic test is also accepted. The Academic version of IELTS measures English language proficiency needed for an academic, higher learning environment. This is the format that is required for an application to the University of Toronto. The minimum IELTS score required is an overall score of 7.5, with at least 7 in each component.

All test scores or documents must arrive by the application deadline, and we cannot make offers of admission conditional upon scores that arrive or improve after the application deadline.
