The Combined J.D./M.A. (Economics) Program is designed for students who intend to pursue careers in areas that require some sophistication in economics, such as competition policy, commercial contracting, mergers and acquisitions, business organization, tax policy, environmental law and international trade regulation.

The J.D./M.A. in Economics allows a combined-degree applicant to complete both the J.D. and the 8-month M.A. program in three years of academic study rather than the four years that would be required in order to receive each degree separately. Note: the J.D. cannot be combined with any of the collaborative programs. Applicants must apply to each program separately but indicate on their applications that they wish to be considered for the Combined J.D./M.A. program. They wil be considered for the Combined Program after they have secured independent admission to the J.D. and M.A. programs. They will be registered in the Faculty of Law for all three years of the program and in the Department of Economics as well for the last two years.

Requirements

1. In the first year of the program students complete all first year courses of the J.D. program at the Faculty of Law. 
2. In the second and third years of the program, in addition to the math stat review (ECO 1010H), students must complete six half courses in Economics and 45 credits in Law as follows:

(a)  the following four economics courses:

      ECO 2060H Microeconomic Theory
      ECO 2061H Macroeconomic Theory
      ECO 2408H Econometrics
      ECO 3501H Economic Analysis of Law

(b)  any other two economic courses, subject to approval by the Graduate Director.
      The following courses are recommended and will receive automatic approval:

       ECO 2300H International Trade
       ECO 2503H Financial Economics I
       ECO 2600H Public Economics I
       ECO 2601H Public Economics II
       ECO 2900H Industrial Organization I
       ECO 2901H Industrial Organization II
       ECO 2908H Environmental & Resource Economics
       ECO 3500H Economics of Organizations and Contracts

(c)  a minimum of two from the following list of law courses (the law credit is in brackets)

Recognizing that one or more of the courses listed may not be offered in any given year, substitutions can be made with the approval of the Combined Program Director.

(d)  An additional number of credits at the Faculty of Law in courses approved by the
      Combined Program Director in Law such that the total number of law credits equals 45

Students must satisfy the requirements as established for each degree program. Students will be registered in the Faculty of Law for all three years of the program and in the Department of Economics for the last two:

Students enrolled in joint programs MUST complete the requirements of both programs in order to graduate in a joint program. No diplomas will be awarded until all the requirements for a joint program are fulfilled.
