Getting Their Priorities Straight

Professor Flood spoke in the session about “Who calls the shots? — the role of key players in priority setting”, which covered the following topics:

• Consumer views in decision-making — whose priorities?
• Engaging clinicians in priority ‘policy’ decisions
• The role of institutions in different systems
• The role of the public, the media, consumers, health professionals, advocacy agencies, politicians and the judiciary in setting priorities
• The manager / clinician interface
• Resource scarcity, clinical uncertainty — and the influence on priority setting
• The reasonableness of decision-making and appeal rights
• Rights, ethics and saying ‘no’
• What are the outcomes from different perspectives?
