Legal problems can be analyzed and prescriptions evaluated from a variety of alternative viewpoints, such as law and economics, law and philosophy (including utilitarianism, Kantianism and Aristotelian theories), legal history, critical legal studies, feminism, critical race theory and sociological theories of law.

Candidates for the specialized LLM in legal theory can concentrate their studies in one area or design a curriculum which canvasses the spectrum of legal theory.

Many of the Faculty's powerful roster of legal theorists are cross-appointed to the departments of philosophy, political science and classics, which enables students to critically analyze a wide range of theoretical approaches to a number of legal issues.

The Faculty’s extensive system of workshops and special lectures brings a wide range of well-known theorists from North America and abroad to the law school to provide further theoretical perspectives and stimulate active scholarly debate at our school.
