Combined J.D./M.A. (European, Russian and Eurasian Studies) Program

Co-Directors: Professor Karen Knop, Law and Graduate Co-ordinator, CERES

Legal issues are at the forefront of the changes currently transforming Russia and Eastern Europe, and the Combined J.D./M.A. (European, Russian and Eurasian Studies) Program enables students interested in these issues to combine their law degree with intensive study of this region.

The program permits the completion of both degrees in four years rather than the five years it would take to acquire them independently. In the first year of the programme, students complete all first year courses at the Faculty of Law. In the three combined upper years, students fulfill the compulsory requirements of the upper years of the J.D. and the course requirements for the combined programme.

Requirements

  1. In the first year of the program students complete all first year courses at the Faculty of Law.
  2. In the following three years of combined study, students:
       a. Take 45 credits in the Faculty of Law
       b. Satisfy the compulsory requirements of the J.D., including the moot, a Supervised Upper   Year Research Paper and a perspective course;
       c. Take 10 half courses at the Centre for European, Russian, and Eurasian Studies (CERES)
       d. Take one of:
                    i. 2 further half courses in CERES, or
                   ii. 6 credits in law, or
                  iii. a combination of 1 half course in CERES and 3 credits in law
  3. During the second year students take at least 4 half courses at CERES.
  4. As a general rule, students will write the law school Supervised Upper Year Research Paper and take the CERES research seminar (ERE 2000) in different academic years.
  5. Reading competence must be demonstrated before the beginning of the final year in one of the region's languages, pertinent to the research undertaken by the student for the major research paper in ERE2000Y.

Students will also be encouraged to spend a summer working in a country of the region as CERES Summer Interns.

Students in years 2 - 4 of the program must submit their course selections to the program co-ordinators from law and CERES for approval.

Students enrolled in joint programs MUST complete the requirements of both programs in order to graduate in a joint program. No diplomas will be awarded until all the requirements for a joint program are fulfilled.
