Law and Economics Program

The Law and Economics Program is a long-standing example of the Faculty of Law’s belief in inderdisciplinary approaches to the study of law. The program offers students enrolled in the J.D. Program special study and research opportunities in a broad range of subject areas with a significant law-economics interface.
The program brings together teachers from four separate disciplines: the Faculty of Law, the Department of Political Science, the Department of Economics, and the Joseph L. Rotman School of Management.
Subject areas available to students as part of the J.D. curriculum include competition policy, public utility and related regulation, economic analysis of traditional legal doctrines, communications regulation, environmental control, personal income maintenance laws, tax policy, land use planning, and international trade regulation. Any student enrolled in the J.D. program is free to take any or all of these courses.
The program also sponsors the Law and Economics Workshop, which brings Canadian and international experts and practitioners to the law school on a regular basis to share their knowledge and current research with faculty and students. The seminar may be taken for academic credit.
The program’s co-directors are Professor Michael Trebilcock and Ed Iacobucci.
