PBSC: Envisioning Global LGBT Human Rights Project

Envisioning Global LGBT Rights Project

The Envisioning Global LGBT Rights Project is a multi-disciplinary human rights project with a broad mandate to document discrimination against sexual minorities abroad. Its goals include facilitating the development and enhancement of LGBT rights by supporting international partners and LGBT activists with legal and social research. Students involved in the project develop working reports on the state of LGBT rights in a variety of different jurisdictions (including the Caribbean, Africa, and India). Students also assist foreign legal challenges by providing needed legal research assistance; including comparative constitutional law.

The project involves building dynamic working relationships with leading human rights lawyers in Canada and abroad. Students have the opportunity to work on dynamic and evolving LGBT research in the selected jurisdictions as they respond to the needs of international partners actively engaged in advocacy work.

How Does the Envisioning Global LGBT Rights Project work?

This is the third year for the Envisioning Global LGBT Rights Project. Students will be building existing country reports, studying human rights mechanisms of international organizations (such as the UN and OAS), and assisting international partners with legal research. Students will be divided amongst a variety of different jurisdictions and teamed with legal partners in Canada and those jurisdictions who will direct their research and inquiries according to local needs. Students will also have the opportunity to meet with the entire Envisioning Legal Team involved in the project here in Canada in order to share and co-ordinate information and resources.  The Legal Team in Canada includes lawyers and activists who are involved in LGBT human rights and constitutional right both in Canada and internationally.
