The Faculty of Law’s The Faculty of Law’s Arthur Ripstein, professor of law and philosophy, and a 2016 Killam Research Fellow, has been designated a University Professor. This designation recognizes remarkable scholarly achievement and pre-eminence, and is the University of Toronto’s most prestigious professorship. It is highly competitive in nature, since no more than two per cent of the professoriate may hold this distinguished designation at a time.

In his almost 30 years at the University of Toronto, Ripstein has made significant and celebrated scholarly contributions to the fields of legal and political philosophy.  He has produced a ground-breaking body of interdisciplinary scholarship spanning a wide range of topics, including the history of philosophy, theories of justice, tort law, and the nature of liberalism, nationalism and multiculturalism.

The University of Toronto has a total of 13 University Professors in the social sciences and humanities, including the five from the law school.

A public intellectual, talented teacher and mentoring supervisor, he has devoted tremendous time and energy to bringing philosophy to the general public. In addition, he has given back remarkably to the university as a dedicated chair of the Department of Philosophy and tri-campus Graduate Department of Philosophy, on Governing Council, and on the Special Joint Advisory Committee on the Memorandum of Agreement with UTFA, to highlight only a few initiatives.

The law school now counts five University Professors, including Professors Stephen Waddams, Michael Trebilcock, Ernie Weinrib, David Dyzenhaus, and one University Professor Emeritus, Professor Marty Friedland.

The Faculty of Law congratulates Professor Ripstein on this impressive designation.
