Faculty of Law Professor Jutta Brunnée, associate dean of the graduate program, is one of 84 new Fellows—one of nine from the University of Toronto—elected to the prestigious Royal Society of Canada. Reflecting diverse backgrounds and disciplines, these new Fellows were elected by peers in recognition of their outstanding scholarly, scientific and artistic achievement.

Brunnée holds the Metcalf Chair in Environmental Law and is one of the world’s most influential scholars in international environmental law, international law and international legal theory. Her award-winning research on “interactional law” advances a novel theory of international legal obligation and how international law influences international actors. She has contributed groundbreaking ideas to the understanding of environmental treaty design, lawmaking and compliance processes, and international climate change law.

These awards and fellowships are one of the highest honours a scholar can receive in the arts, humanities and social sciences from Canada’s most notable academic society.

In addition, three scholars from the University of Toronto received RSC medals and one received a research award.

This year's new Fellows will be inducted to the academies of the RSC during the Induction and Awards Ceremony on Saturday, November 16, 2013 at the Fairmont Banff Springs in Banff, Alberta.
