Prof. Ed Morgan has been appointed a judge of the Superior Court of Justice in Toronto, effective immediately. Rob Nicholson, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, made the announcement today

Mr. Justice Morgan has been a professor at the Faculty of Law since 1986 (full professor since 2008). He practised with Davies Ward & Beck from 1989 to 1997 and thereafter maintained a litigation practice. His main areas of practice were commercial litigation, constitutional litigation, private international law and human rights law.

"All of us who know Ed know what a terrific, incisive and thoughtful addition he will be to the bench," says Prof. Mayo Moran, dean of the Faculty of Law. "At the same time, it is hard to imagine the Faculty of Law without Ed’s presence.  He has been an academic leader in so many ways including in the founding of our law and literature program.  He is also a  generous, committed member of our community."

Mr. Justice Morgan has appeared at all levels of Canadian courts, including the Ontario, Alberta, Nova Scotia courts and the Federal Court of Canada. He has also provided expert evidence on international law issues to numerous Canadian as well as U.S. federal and state courts. He has represented a number of foreign governments and many public interest groups in constitutional and other cases across Canada, and has appeared numerous times at the Supreme Court of Canada. In addition, he has testified on matters of law reform, national security, and foreign affairs before Parliamentary committees in both the House of Commons and the Senate.

Mr. Justice Morgan received a Bachelor of Arts from Northwestern University in 1976, a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Toronto in 1984 and a Master of Laws from Harvard University in 1986. He was admitted to the Bar of Ontario in 1988.

Mr. Justice Morgan was a law clerk to Madam Justice Bertha Wilson of the Supreme Court of Canada from 1984 to 1985. He has published numerous articles and legal publications. He was the Ontario Chair from 2001 to 2006 and National President from 2004 to 2007 of the Canadian Jewish Congress and an advisory board member of the Canadian Human Rights Museum from 2004 to 2005.
