Senator Hugh Segal and the Hon. Bill Graham to Speak at U of T Law School on Canada's Global Citizenship

(Toronto, Ontario) - On Feb. 10, 2007, the International Law Society at the University of Toronto Faculty of Law will host a conference: Canada, Global Bystander or Global Citizen: Evaluating our Performance in the International Legal Order. Senator Hugh Segal, former Chief of Staff to the Prime Minister of Canada and former President of the Institute for Research on Public Policy, will deliver the keynote address: "From a Unipolar to Multipolar World: The Canadian Foreign Policy Opportunity."

Other speakers will include Douglas George, Director of the Intellectual Property, Information and Techonology Trade Policy Division at the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade; His Excellency Omar Samad, Afghanistan's Ambassador to Canada; and His Excellency Alan Baker, Israel's Ambassador to Canada. The Hon. Bill Graham, former Interim Leader of the Liberal Party of Canada and current Member of Parliament, will deliver the closing remarks.

"Our faculty has a long tradition of academic leadership in international law and our International Law Society students have shown tremendous initiative in promoting an evaluation of Canada's citizenship on the global stage."
The primary goal of the International Law Society is to promote awareness of global events as well as an understanding of diverse legal cultures in order to assess their influence on both public and private international law.

Bio of Senator Hugh Segal

Hugh Segal was appointed to the Senate of Canada by Prime Minister Martin in August 2005. He sits as a member of the Conservative Party and serves on the Agriculture Research and Aboriginal Affairs Senate Reform Committees and chairs the Senate Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs.

He is a former Chief of Staff to Prime Minister Mulroney and Associate Secretary of Cabinet for federal provincial relations in Ontario. Mr. Segal is a well-known expert on Canadian public policy and is former President of the Institute for Research on Public Policy. Prior to joining the IRPP in 1999, Mr. Segal was a former Chief of Staff to the Prime Minister of Canada and Associate Cabinet Secretary in the province of Ontario.

Along with being a Senior Research Fellow at McMillan Binch Mendelsohn, Mr. Segal is a Senior Fellow at the Queen's School of Policy Studies and a director of various public companies in the fields of energy, construction, engineering, manufacturing and portfolio management. He is a director of the Atlantic Council, the Historica Foundation and Chair of the Walter and Duncan Gordon Foundation.

Mr. Segal was awarded the Order of Canada in 2003 and an honorary doctorate in law from the Royal Military College of Canada in 2004.
