Press Release
September 2, 2008
Toronto - The Faculty of Law is pleased to announce the September 5th official opening of a new centre for constitutional rights, which will be devoted to research and education in the area of constitutional rights in Canada. The Centre will also house a unique legal clinic that will bring together students, faculty and members of the bar to work on significant constitutional cases.
“This centre will play a vital role in articulating Canada's constitutional vision to the broader world,” says Dean Mayo Moran. “It will be the cross- roads of constitutional education, research and advocacy,” she adds.
The Centre’s inaugural, celebratory colloquium, Litigating the Charter: Strategies for a Successful Charter Claim in the 21st Century, will be held on Friday, September 5 from 2:00-4:30 at the Faculty of Law, Flavelle House at 78 Queen’s Park.
The colloquium and reception following it will also be an opportunity to meet its Executive Director Cheryl Milne, a leading member of the constitutional law bar in Ontario. She joins the Faculty of Law after having spent seventeen years as counsel at Justice for Children and Youth.
Law alumnus David Asper (LLM ’07), Executive Vice President of CanWest Global Communications Corporation, recently made a $7.5 million gift to establish the David Asper Centre for Constitutional Rights. His gift, the largest ever to a Canadian law school, will ensure that constitutional issues, such as those under scrutiny by the recently cancelled Court Challenges program, stay on the national political radar.
